When given the choice between sweet and salty, I almost always opt for sweet. Sugary treats are just so satisfying for breakfast, as an afternoon snack, after a long day...or in the middle of the night when your sweet tooth is begging for just one more bite.
Because I am such an expert on all things sweet, I’ve narrowed down my list of favourites to three bakeries in Calgary.
Crave Cookies and Cupcakes 2 locations in Calgary
Crave’s cupcakes, cookies, and cakes are almost too pretty to eat some days. They experiment with colour and designs to make their trusted recipes extra special each season. Crave’s sister owners use their grandmother’s recipes to satisfy your sugar cravings.
They always have a selection of freshly baked flavours on display, so I go to crave when I need a cupcake ASAP. Crave’s other specialty is beautiful custom cakes.
Not only is Crave delicious, they also provide sweet bits of goodness for those among us with gluten sensitivities.
Glamorgan Bakery 19, 3919 Richmond Row SW
For the days I don’t want to decide between savoury and sweet, I go to Glamorgan Bakery for a dozen of freshly baked cheese buns. These buns come white or whole wheat, either fresh or frozen to stock up and throw in the oven later.
Their specialty is Dutch style baking, including these sought after cheese buns. Glamorgan, however, also bakes breads, breakfast pastries, muffins, cookies, donuts, and custom cakes complete with buttercream. For savoury lunch on the run, they bake pizza buns, beef pies, and sausage rolls. Don’t forget your sticky cinnamon bun for desert.
A Ladybug Bakery and Café 2132-10 Aspen Stone Blvd SW
Europeans love their pastries, and we love the pastries that Ladybug Bakery bakes. French pastry chef, Yves Ghesquiere, serves his sweet creations with gourmet coffee. Nobody has to ask me twice to spend a morning dipping my freshly baked croissant in a hot artisanal coffee!
When I visit Ladybug, I enjoy a sweet treat (or two, or three) in the moment, and bring home frozen packages for later. They also serve a light bistro menu, as well as a seasonal picnic lunch to go.
What I love most about Ladybug Bakery and Café is that they use only certified organic ingredients, and local wherever possible. It feels good to satisfy your sweet tooth when you know where the ingredients come from.
