Distance to Independence | Calgary

Discover the untold story of how a group of Canadian and American volunteers of Ukrainian descent helped secure Ukraine's independence in 1991. This documentary, created by Akim Galimov of the "Real History" project, explores the journey of 80 individuals who travelled to Ukraine in the final months of the Soviet Union to support the independence movement. The film features rare archival footage from the early 1990s, including scenes from Donetsk, and reveals how the KGB monitored these visitors. It highlights their efforts to distribute pro-independence leaflets, bring underground printing equipment, and engage with local communities ahead of the historic referendum. Join the screening at Canyon Meadows Cinemas, followed by a discussion and Q&A with producers Akim Galimov and Anna Palenchuk. It is a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the enduring connections between Canada and Ukraine.
